If you are nearby any major bookstores or newsagents in Malaysia, do have a quick look out for Digital SLR Magazine May 2012 issue at the magazine stands. Turn to Page 18, and you will find me there !!
This was a rare opportunity for me to have my photographs published in prints.
I do have several small previous encounters where some of my photographs were published in local newspaper and other magazines but those were mostly assignment, and some were simply doing a good friend a favor. However, in this Digital SLR magazine, there were FOUR full pages featuring my street photographs taken at Kuala Lumpur streets (Chow Kit, Jalan Masjid India, Pudu, Petaling Street, Bukit Bintang). I was initially asked to submit 8 to 9 photographs, and out of which only 4 or 5 would make it to prints. However, I decided to send in 14 images, and much to my surprise 10 were selected and printed. Sometimes I do believe it is better to give more than you were asked to in the first place. More importantly, those were street photographs taken during my shutter therapy sessions, very recently. It was indeed a flabbergasting moment the first time I saw the prints with my own eyes. This was the first time my photographs were used in a fully dedicated photography magazine.

congratulations, Robin!
ReplyDeletePrinted stuff feels much better than online-publishing, am I right?
Thumbs up!
bw
Sven
Thanks Sven !! Agreed, printing is surely different. I would not say better, they both have their distinctive traits, but strictly speaking for street photographs, I do think print works better.
DeleteCongratulations, it's a well-earned honor!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good non-work ;0)
Thanks Bert !! An honor indeed.
DeleteCongratulation, Robin!
ReplyDeleteYour work deserves to be published in and outside of your blog.
You've been consistently busy outdo-ing yourself and the blogpages your produce are getting better and better.
Photographs you took and pieces you wrote on the subjects of streetlife, human interaction, how people with camera's interact (mainly online), yummy Asian food, politics, friends, hands-on camera reviews , your ever so quick, fluent and to the point replies on what people comment on your blogpages, they are simply a joy to read and food for thought.
It is only a matter of time till your next printed publication, I'm sure.
All the best,
Cheers,
Luke R (from Holland)

ReplyDeleteIn my dictionary your picture is shown in the definition of "street photographer"
Greetings from you Olympus old-timer in America.
Don
Thanks Don. It is difficult to define what "street photography" truly is, but to me, as long as you hit the streets and shoot with your heart, it has got to be street photography and you can't do much wrong.
DeleteWell done, and what a fine spread of good street photography!
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter !!
DeleteCongrats Robin. Your work is excellent. FWIW your review of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is what made me finally decide to sell all of my Canon gear and swtich everything over to the E-M5. I recently received the first of the E-M5 bodies I've ordered and I couldn't be happier with it.
ReplyDeleteHello Just A Guy With a Camera,
DeleteWow, that was a bold move to let go of your Canon gear. Welcome to the Micro 4/3 world !! I am sure you will treasure its smaller size and lighter weight, and overall very powerful and versatile performance.
Congratulations Robin--A super reward for a job well done .I look forward to viewing the article when the mag reaches Sydney

DeleteYou photographs are amazing. So glad to see you get the recognition. I am a long way off in Florida, USA, but I love your blog and your work. I have the OMD EM5 in black and silver and a bag of lenses. I couldn't resist:-) I was just in Hong Kong and got some great street photography, but you get right up to the subject and get the super cool shots.. Your weddings are awesome as well. Congratulations RalphL

DeleteGood morning, Robin.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday, I make a moment of history in my life by purchasing my FIRST ever Photography magazine namely Digital SLR Photography as normally I roam the net for information on photography. But this time it's special. It's YOU, ROBIN WONG.
Though I shoot with Nikon at the moment but deep inside I am still an Olympus, that OMD E-M5 makes me dream to hold one.
Congratulation and thank you for sharing those great work, Robin.
John Ari Ragai, a Melanau who loves the street scene.
Hello John,
DeleteThanks for the show of support !!
It does not matter which camera we choose or use, it all comes down to the photographer's vision and artistic sense.
Go out and shoot more street !!
Congrats Robin!
ReplyDeleteIts only a matter of time before the quality of your photos captures the eye of the publishing sector.
May you grow from strength to strength... and give us more good stuff :)

Thanks Calex !! Will surely hunt for more opportunities to get published.

Hello Jon,
DeleteThanks. However the Digital SLR Magazine is the local Malaysian version, I do not think you can get it elsewhere in the world. Even the front cover page is different.
Congratulations. Well deserved.
ReplyDeleteThanks fgbrault!
DeleteCongratulations RW !!!
ReplyDeleteThanks !
DeleteDon't you need release forms for people in your photos?
ReplyDeleteOwen
Owen,
DeleteNope, we don't use that for street photography. That is strictly for portraiture works.
Hi Robin,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations mate! You've earned it.

DeleteGood work Robin. You do have a sympathetic and brave eye for the reality of KL. I think the folk you photograph appreciate your honesty and direct approach as well. You treat them as real people that you are making a portrait of, rather than "subjects". Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tom !! Do give me a shout the next time you come to KL, will bring you to other parts of the streets. More to explore !!
DeleteCongratulations Robin, well deserved exposure in the magazine for your photographs.

ReplyDeleteWonderful blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to start my own website soon but I'm a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I'm totally confused .. Any recommendations? Many thanks!
